Dili — The West African Spanish-speaking Equatorial Guinea on Wednesday was admitted by consensus as a full right member of the Portuguese-speaking Community (CPLP) without need for a voting, sources with Portugal and Brazil delegations said.
A Portuguese delegation source told journalists that "there was a general consensus" in favor of the entry of Equatorial Guinea, but also an "intense debate" raised by Portugal, after which it was agreed that the president of this new member of the CPLP, Teodoro Obiang, should explain the steps already taken and planned to comply with the membership terms. On the other hand, the source from the Brazilian delegation told the Portuguese News Agency (Lusa) the CPLP states unanimously decided to "incorporate" Equatorial Guinea, and there was not a vote, but "a formation of a general opinion" that involved a debate: "people argue, put their problems, their visions." The decision was made during a restricted session of the 10th CPLP Summit of Heads of State and Government, held in Dili, East Timor, Equatorial Guinea did not attend.
