South Africa: DRC Rebel Leader Related to Kabila?

South African police have arrested a suspect linked to an alleged plot to overthrow the government of the Democratic Republic of Congo, reports Agence France-Presse (AFP).

The report also notes that the man who is suspected to be one of the key players in the plot also claims to be the half-brother of President Joseph Kabila.

The DRC government has however denied any link between the accused and President Kabila, who became head of state after his father's assassination in 2001.

The arrest follows the capture of 19 suspects in the Limpopo Province of South Africa last Tuesday. One of the suspects claims U.S. citizenship.

The suspects are believed to belong to Union des Nationaliste pour le Renouveau (Union of Nationalists for Renewal), a group which may have been masquerading as game ranger trainees in north-eastern South Africa, according to AFP.

The case will resume in Pretoria on February 19 so the suspects can retain legal representation, reports Deutsche Presse-Agentur.
