Tanzania: Vodacom Launches Free Cash Transfers Campaign

VODACOM Tanzania has launched M-Pesa promotion campaign whereby its customers can now send money for free.

Speaking in Dar es Salaam, Vodacom Tanzania's Managing Director Rene Meza said the campaign is the company's gesture to thank over 4.5 million customers who continue to rely on M-Pesa for their daily transactions.

Under the promotion, he said, all M-Pesa users will instantly get a refund of their transfer charges on any amount sent to Vodacom customer. He said the refunds will be in the form of airtime and will be paid immediately after the transaction has been made.

"Vodacom customers would not need to subscribe for this service as it would be available to all prepaid M-PESA users across the country", he said. M-Pesa was launched in April 2008 and has since proved to be an invaluable payment solution with over 1 trillion shillings transacted per month.

"The service has evolved from money transfer service solution, addressing the business and corporate sectors needs to collect cash or disperse payments", he said. M-Pesa is also directly connected to various banks allowing money to be deposited directly into a bank account or funds withdrawn from a bank account through any of the 40,000 M-Pesa agents across the country.

"Last month, M-Pesa partnered with Heritage Insurance to launch a funeral cover service- Faraja Bima - which has seen great adoption by our customers", said Meza. He added: "We continue to expand the range of financial services delivered in response to our customer's financial needs and pushing back access barriers to bring financial services closer to the people".
